The Dissolve Features tool was created to maintain a
normalized feature class that participates in a complex
geodatabase. If a feature class participates in a
topology class or relationship classes then it is
not convenient to use dissolve routines that output
a new feature class. Dissolve Features requires an
edit session because the dissolve process is applied
to the actual input feature class. A maintain relationships
option preserve the integrity of the relationship
model as the dissolve takes place.
